Decorated general who served in the Battle of the Bulge during World War II and at Hamburger Hill in Vietnam.
He studied Political Science at the University of New Hampshire and subsequently enlisted in the U.S. Army as a second lieutenant.
He earned five Distinguished Service Medals, four Legion of Merit honors, a Purple Heart, and numerous foreign military awards.
His two sons both pursued military careers.
He and General Malin Craig both commanded troops in World War II.
