Before fame
He grew up during the years surrounding the 1979 Iranian Revolution when the monarchy of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi was overthrown and replaced with the Islamic Republic. His father Ali Khamenei was an influential revolutionary cleric who eventually became president of Iran and then Supreme Leader in 1989. He served during the Iran-Iraq War in the 1980s and after the war he pursued religious studies and entered the Qom Seminary where he studied Shiite Islamic jurisprudence and theology. He eventually advanced to the clerical rank of Hojjatoleslam. He gradually became involved in the internal administration of the Supreme Leader's office during the 1990s and 2000s. His influence was widely discussed during the 2009 Iranian presidential election. His rise culminated in 2026 when he became the Supreme Leader of Iran.
