Regarded as one of Colombia's most accomplished television actors, she won Simon Bolivar Awards, India Catalina Awards, a Premios Tu Mundo, and numerous TvyNovelas Awards for his work in series such as Maria Madrugada, Woman President, and El Senor de los Cielos.
While training at Colombia's National School of Drama, he pseudonymously wrote humor pieces for several Bogota newspapers. Early in his acting career, he appeared in the RCN TV series La Casa de las Dos Palmas.
A prolific theater performer as well as a screen actor, he appeared in Camarin Teatro del Carmen productions of Frankenstein, Don Juan, and Doctor Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
His marriage to broadcast journalist Adriana Arango lasted from 1993 until 2010 and produced a son named Juan Jose Diaz Arango.
He and Daniel Arenas both starred in popular Colombian telenovelas.
