Before Fame

He took up trumpet after seeing Louis Armstrong play when he was twelve years old and won a scholarship to the Royal College of Music when he was seventeen.

Trivia

He acted as conductor of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra for Deep Purple's Concerto for Group and Orchestra recording.

Family Life

He was married twice, but both ended in divorce; he tried to commit suicide twice after he and his second wife separated.

Associated With

He composed a lot of film music during his life including for Bridge on the River Kwai, which starred William Holden.
