Singer and founder of the band Procol Harum, the group who released the popular song "A White Shade of Pale." After delving into a solo career in the late 1970s, he joined forces with Eric Clapton to play in Clapton's band for a couple of years. He released 3 solo studio albums and one solo live album.

As a child he taught himself how to play three instruments: the piano, the cornet, and the trombone.

In June 2003 at the Queen's Birthday Honours, he was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire.
