Located at the centre of the Indochinese Peninsula, it is bordered by four countries: Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, and Malaysia. It was historically known as Siam. The country has generally alternated between constitutional monarchy, democracy and military rule.

Thai people eat most dishes with a spoon and forks while chopsticks are usually used for eating soups. More than 90 percent of the population is Buddhist. The Golden Buddha is a highly revered artifact and is housed in the Temple of the Golden Buddha in Bangkok.
