About

Australian outdoorsman, video content creator, teacher, and author of The Backyard Adventurer most widely recognized for the deliberate adventures on which he embarks for his self-titled YouTube channel. Some of these many escapades have included planting over 1,440 trees in under 24 hours, camping in a 100-year old gum tree, and running a marathon through a luxury hotel. These feats and many more have helped him earn a following of over 700,000 subscribers on his channel.

Before Fame

He earned his undergraduate degree from the Monash University in Melbourne, Australia, where he later began giving lectures in outdoor education. He also went on to earn a PhD in Outdoor Education from the same institute. It was for his PhD that he created his "Bass by Kayak" 6-part video series in 2016, which incidentally also introduced his YouTube channel. He resigned from his lecturing position in 2021 to focus fulltime on parenthood and his channel.

Trivia

Despite having resigned from his position as a fulltime lecturer at Monash University in the year 2021, he has continued to work as a public speaker for special events around the world. He has given TED Talks and other lectures in which he shares quirky anecdotes about his life and his wild adventures.

Family Life

His father was a painter for over 50 years. In a 2021 interview with The Outdoor Journal, he described seeing both of his parents work tirelessly throughout his entire childhood. He and his wife, Helen Barclay, are the parents of 2 daughters.

Associated With

In September 2023, he created a video for his YouTube channel in which he recreated the bottle redemption scheme made famous by Kramer and Newman, portrayed by Michael Richards and Wayne Knight, on Seinfeld. He ended up collecting over 10,000 discarded roadside bottles for redemption.
