English educator and historian who taught at the University of Leicester from 1950 to 1980.
He attended Trinity College, Cambridge, where he headed the University Education Society and joined the Communist Party of Great Britain.
Between 1943 and 1998, he published a number of works on education in society including A Student's View of the Universities and Education and the Social Order, 1940-1990.
He married Joan Peel in 1941 and they had two sons together.
He served in the British Army during World War II and became a close friend of the actor David Niven during his service.
