American attorney, politician, novelist and Chicano Movement activist who is the inspiration for Dr. Gonzo, in the acclaimed novel Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas by Hunter S. Thompson.
He worked his way through junior college so he could be the first person in his family to get a college education.
He defended Chicano groups and other activists and wrote two novels: The Autobiography of a Brown Buffalo and The Revolt of the Cockroach people.
His marriage with Betty Daves lasted until 1963. He remained married to his second wife, Socorro Aguiniga, until 1971.
He is portrayed by the actor Benicio del Toro in the 1998 film Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, which is based on Thompson's novel of the same name.
