Before Fame

After graduating from from Trinity College in Hartford in 1956, he acted with the Mark Twain Masquers and other local theatrical groups. He also drove a bakery truck.

Trivia

He started his onscreen career in 1962, with an uncredited role as Garfield on the cop sitcom Car 54, Where Are You? in the episode "How Smart Can You Get?" which, in 1997, TV Guide ranked at No. 61 on its list of the best TV episodes of all time. Throughout the course of his lengthy acting career, he made over 135 appearances in different TV shows and films.

Family Life

He was born Richard Donald Roat Jr. in Hartford, Connecticut. He was married to Kathy (Arntzen) Roat. During a slow period in Roat's acting career in the 1960s, he and his wife founded Richard Roat Associates, a tax firm dedicated to preparing taxes for fellow entertainers.
