Screenwriter and actress who frequently performed with and wrote screenplays for Greta Garbo.
Her birth name was Salomea Steuermann, and she was born in an area of the Austro-Hungarian Empire that is now part of the Ukraine.
She traveled to the United States in 1928 and ended up staying in California for many years, as a result of the rise of Hitler in Europe.
She was the sister of pianist Eduard Steuermann. She married Austrian screenwriter and director, Berthold Viertel, in 1918, and the couple had three sons before divorcing in 1947.
She co-starred with Greta Garbo in the 1930 German film version of Anna Christie, and she also wrote several screenplays for Garbo, including Anna Karenina and Queen Christina.
