Before fame

He appeared in a BBC version of the Dickens classic Oliver Twist at the age of 21.

He turned down the role of Francis Dolarhyde in Red Dragon in order to work on a risky, controversial film called Dogville.

Family life

He married actress Jennifer Connelly, whom he met on the set of A Beautiful Mind. He has two sons named Kai and Stellan and a daughter named Agnes.
