He was a Percussion major at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music.

He was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical for playing John Jasper and Mr. Clive Paget in The Mystery of Edwin Drood.

He was married to Lori Chase from 1998 to 2008 and they had two children together. He was then married to Stephanie Gibson from 2009 to 2012. After his divorce from Gibson, he dated Debra Messing for over two years before beginning a relationship with Ingrid Michaelson in 2015.
