Before Fame

He was raised in Staten Island, New York, and shared his high school years at Carlsbad High School with rapper Method Man. After being exposed to sports like surfing, snowboarding, and skateboarding, he took an interest in them and began his career at Transworld Publications in 1992.

Trivia

In the 2003-2004 season, he served as NBA sideline reporter for ESPN. He covered the 2010 FIFA World Cup for ESPN in South Africa. His film, Alekesam, about the bond between him and his father and their connection to music premiered at Tribeca Film Festival in the year 2012.

He was born in Los Angeles, California to a Haitian mother and renowned South African jazz musician Hugh Masekela. He has an older brother named Nathan Gonzalez. He was romantically linked to actress Lupita Nyong'o before their break up in October of 2023.
