Stylistic director known for his witty dialogue and exquisitely decorated sets. He first received attention for his 1998 film Rushmore and his 2001 film The Royal Tenenbaums, then went on to gain a wider audience for such films as The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, The Darjeeling Limited, and The Grand Budapest Hotel.
His 2014 film The Grand Budapest Hotel received nine Academy Award nominations and won the awards for Best Original Score, Best Costume Design, Best Production Design, and Best Makeup and Hairstyling.
He began a relationship with Lebanese writer and costume designer Juman Malouf; in 2016, they welcomed a daughter. His brother Eric is an illustrator.
He cast Jason Schwartzman as the lead in Rushmore when he was an unknown actor. Schwartzman then went on to earn parts in numerous films and star in an HBO series, while also playing roles in Anderson's films The Darjeeling Limited, Moonrise Kingdom, and The Grand Budapest Hotel.
