Bringing the southern rock genre to the forefront of music, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006. They took their name to their gym teacher that hassled students with long hair.
Trivia
Their 1972 debut album (Pronounced 'Lĕh-'nérd 'Skin-'nérd) contained most of their hits including "Free Bird."
